Microsoft Purview: Registration of a Self-hosted integration runtime (SHIR)

Microsoft Purview is designed to connect to data sources to help you manage sensitive data, simplify data discovery, and ensure correct usage of data. Microsoft Purview can connect to sources across your entire landscape, including multi-cloud and on-premises.

The integration runtime (IR) is the compute infrastructure that Microsoft Purview uses to power data scan across different network environments. A self-hosted integration runtime (SHIR) can be used to scan data source in an on-premises network or a virtual network. The installation of a self-hosted integration runtime needs an on-premises machine or a virtual machine inside a private network.

Requirements of the SHIR:
A 64-bit Operating System with .NET Framework 4.7.2

2-GHz processor with 4 cores, 8 GB of RAM, and 80 GB of available hard drive space

Disable host machine hibernation

Deployment Steps:

1. Provision your SHIR vm / on-premises server based on the SHIR virtual machine requirements can be found here.

2. Go to Portal > Purview Governance Portal > Data Map > Integration Runtime > New

select Self-Hosted > Continue

Select a unique Name > Description > Create

Select Download the integration runtime link from the download site onto the destination VM or on-premises machine that you have marked as the SHIR endpoint.

Copy the Download the integration runtime link onto your SHIR vm / server and download the latest version of the IntegrationRuntime_5.x.msi file > Install.

Copy and paste the authentication key from the Azure Portal when prompted on the Register Integration Runtime (Self-hosted) page > select Register.

Confirm that the your vm has been registered as a SHIR for your Purview Account (you are only allowed 1 SHIR per Purview Account. Multiple Purview accounts require multiple SHIR servers).

Disable / Enabling remote access option is only availble for a single SHIR node / server to enable secure node-to-node comms. When you deploy multiple nodes, this option is greyed out as secured access is mandatory and cannot be disabled.

Registration Success window.

Microsoft does recommend HA by deploying 2 SHIR nodes per Microsoft Purview Account.

Verification

The verification window shows the SHIR connection to the cloud service and shows the credential status = in sync.

A troubleshooting bar is presented at the top for any deep diving if required.

You are also offered the option to generate a backup.
